New year, new internet iteration of self. I’ve been lurking around on this platform for a while with (a tinge of jealous) admiration for those who’ve built a cute presence here. My friend Allie has been nudging me to start my own Substack and the year of the fire horse feels like the perfect time. After all, the horse is meant to bring steady motivation. May we all gallop towards our hopes and dreams!
Substack reminds me a bit of the golden era of Tumblr. In 2010 Tumblr was my diary. I shared Adderall fueled love poems while I procrastinated writing school papers. I divulged too many intimate details about the aftermath of a crash and burn breakup with my first college boyfriend. I cringe now at the thought of them, my deepest shames spread on a table for anyone to flip through with full knowledge that he (and many of my classmates) were reading them. I also can’t help but admire her, 19 year old me, green as hell in adulthood, who unabashedly hit publish without fear of other’s opinions. There was a feeling back then that the internet was just for us, not corporatized to hell and back (do you accept these cookies?!) Now I feel like everyones watching me in a hellish panopticon. I swung far in the opposite direction, terrified to share at all. I’ve created sporadically but I’ve mostly felt stagnant. I impulsively deleted my Tumblr while quarantined at my parents’ house in 2020. My dad was dying of cancer, the world as we knew it was ending, and I purged my online past to gain a semblance of control over the chaos.
I want to get back some of the gumption I had at the dawn of my twenties and I want to hit publish again. This time with boundaries and discernment sprinkled in. If you feel like listening, grab a cup of tea and cozy up. ✧
Earth Angel is about indulging in Earthly pleasures without going off the deep end. It’s a place to learn about wellness that doesn’t feel punitive but instead reflective of a life lived to the fullest. It’s a place to tap into spirituality while keeping your feet on the ground. I will share really good Ebay links, all my beauty secrets, interviews with fellow Earth Angels, and ruminations on how to be spiritual in a material world.
